British landscape painter David Atkins now showing at The Rutland Gallery

British landscape painter David Atkins has joined the roster of artists represented by The Rutland Gallery, bringing his atmospheric depictions of Britain’s changing light and weather to audiences in Rutland, and the midlands of England.

Born in Greenwich in 1964 and trained at St Martin’s School of Art and Winchester School of Art, David Atkins has built a reputation over several decades as a painter of powerful place and mood. His oil paintings, often worked directly from life, respond to shifting conditions — tide, cloud, dusk and season — with broad, confident brushwork and luminous colour.

David Atkins has won major awards including the Horan Prize for Painting at the New English Art Club and the Façade International Prize at the Discerning Eye exhibition, while exhibiting widely across the UK.

Now living and working in Dorset, David Atkins frequently returns to coastal and rural locations, revisiting them repeatedly to capture their emotional essence rather than a literal view. Critics have long praised his ability to balance observation with atmosphere, producing works that feel both immediate and timeless.

David Atkins’ arrival at the Uppingham gallery marks a notable addition to the county’s growing reputation as a cultural destination. The Rutland Gallery specialises in established contemporary artists and presents an eclectic programme free from publisher-led trends — a fitting context for David Atkins’ expressive and painterly landscapes.
