About Uppingham
The Rutland Gallery is located in Uppingham in the county of Rutland, England's smallest county. The county is bounded to the west and north by Leicestershire, to the north east by Lincolnshire and the south by Northamptonshire. Visitors to Uppingham travel from all parts of the country to visit the Uppingham art galleries. Located only 20 miles from the most central point of England, Uppingham is the ideal base to also visit the Leicestershire art galleries, Northamptonshire art galleries and the Lincolnshire art galleries.
Uppingham is a quintessentially English market town with its ironstone buildings and a range of speciality shops and traditional independent retailers. Art is very important to Uppingham with a number of art galleries displaying work from internationally acclaimed artists as well as introducing visitors to talented local artists.
Uppingham has been a functioning market town since the 14th century with traditional country inns, stylish restaurants and cosy English tea rooms dotted around Uppingham.
Uppingham School has been providing education locally since 1584 and is considered one of Britain’s best schools for music as well as housing one of the largest private theatres in the country. Uppingham School was founded by Robert Johnson, the Archdeacon of Leicester, who also established Oakham School.
