Robert Hewer

Robert Hewer (b. 1991) is a British artist whose practice is rooted in portraiture and the human figure. Robert Hewer’s work explores the delicate balance between capturing the complexity of human form and embracing the expressive qualities of paint itself.

Robert Hewer’s portraits are characterised by a dynamic interplay between structure and spontaneity. He strives to convey not only the physical presence of his subjects but also an essence—a fleeting moment or feeling—leaving room for personal interpretation. This open-ended quality gives each piece a unique and evolving personality, a hallmark of his figurative approach.

At the heart of Robert Hewer’s practice is a fascination with the materiality of paint. He treats paint not only as a medium but as a subject in its own right, using its physicality to shape form and convey emotion. The act of mark making—fluid, playful, and intuitive—is central to the energy and vitality found in his work.

Robert Hewer studied Fine Art at Bath School of Art & Design, graduating with a BA (Hons) in 2013. Hewer’s work is shown both in the UK and Internationally.
