Sonia Barton
Born in Cornwall, Sonia Barton draws upon memories of a frequently changing childhood, experiences that continue to inform Sonia Barton’s distinctive still life paintings. Working with a subtle and often muted colour palette, Sonia Barton explores the relationship between form, shape and space through flattened perspectives and gently naïve distortions of everyday objects. Objects are frequently repositioned across the canvas, leaving behind traces of their previous placement through embossed textures, etched lines and layered surfaces.
A strong sense of time, movement and memory flows throughout Sonia Barton’s work. Paint is applied using brushes, palette knives, rollers and rags before being built up in multiple layers and carefully scraped back, revealing hidden marks, textures and patterns beneath the surface. This gradual process allows each painting to develop a natural sense of balance and familiarity between subject and canvas. Sonia Barton takes continual inspiration from aged interiors, weathered coastal surfaces and the beauty found in worn materials, influences that are clearly reflected throughout the work.
Through these carefully constructed compositions, Sonia Barton captures memories, observations and quiet reflections drawn from everyday life.
Sonia Barton graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art from Staffordshire University before completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art Printmaking at University of Brighton, where the highest honours were awarded. Sonia Barton was subsequently offered places to study MA Fine Art at both University of Edinburgh and Central School of Art in London. Sonia Barton now exhibits regularly throughout the United Kingdom.
Paintings by Sonia Barton are held in private collections worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Hong Kong and numerous countries across Europe.
