Penny German ARBSA

Penny German ARBSA is a British artist whose creative journey has evolved from the meticulous discipline of botanical illustration to the expressive world of contemporary oil painting. Today, she is celebrated for her atmospheric still life paintings, where her mastery of light, colour and composition reflects a lifetime of close observation and technical excellence.

Penny German's artistic career began in botanical illustration, a field that combined her love of plants with an exceptional eye for detail. While living in Kuala Lumpur in the early 1990s, she met renowned botanist Dr David Jones at the University of Malaya. Their shared passion for the natural world led to an ambitious collaboration to produce an illustrated guide to Malaysia's rich and diverse flora.

The project culminated in Flora of Malaysia Illustrated, published by Oxford University Press in 1993 and launched at the British High Commission by the Malaysian Minister of Culture. The book remains a valued reference for students, botanists and visitors alike.

Following her return to the UK Penny continued her botanical work, producing a series of illustrations of the Iris atropurpurea family for the Royal Horticultural Society. This body of work was recognised with a Silver Medal at the RHS Spring Show in 2000, cementing her reputation as one of Britain's accomplished botanical illustrators.

While her botanical work demanded precision and scientific accuracy, Penny increasingly found herself drawn to the expressive possibilities of oil painting. Inspired by changing light, atmosphere and the quiet beauty of everyday objects, she developed a distinctive style that combines strong draughtsmanship with painterly freedom. Her still life compositions capture both mood and character, reflecting the same careful observation that defined her earlier botanical work.

Today, Penny German’s work represents the meeting of scientific precision and artistic expression. Whether depicting a luminous arrangement of flowers, or treasured objects, her paintings invite viewers to pause, observe and appreciate the beauty found in both nature and everyday life.
