Mungo Powney

Mungo Powney creates expressive contemporary paintings that seek to connect viewers with a powerful emotional energy. Mungo’s work is driven by a desire to capture something fleeting and deeply internal, an experience that extends beyond the purely physical. At the heart of each painting is a composition designed to resonate on an emotional level, reflecting Mungo’s admiration for artists such as William Gillies, Nicolas de Stael, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Arthur Boyd. He is inspired by their bold, heartfelt approach to painting and their fearless use of simple, joyful colour.

While abstract composition remains central to his practice, Mungo Powney has an enduring fascination with people and everyday objects, which increasingly play an important role in his work. Mungo often spends days considering the perfect subject for a painting, believing that the right object can profoundly shape its emotional character. This continual exploration results in a diverse body of work, as he believes his strongest paintings emerge through experimentation and an openness to new ideas.

Born in 1972, Mungo Powney graduated from Newcastle University in 1994. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United Kingdom in both solo and group exhibitions and is a regular participant in international art exhibitions. Mungo Powney’s paintings are held in private collections and are admired for their expressive energy, rich colour and evocative compositions.
