Michael Thacker MRSS is an acclaimed British sculptor renowned for his striking contemporary stone sculptures that combine geometric abstraction, architectural influence, and organic natural forms. Working primarily in locally sourced Lincolnshire limestone, Michael Thacker enhances his sculptures with exquisite 24-carat hand-beaten gold leaf, creating dramatic interactions between light, texture, and form that have become a hallmark of his work.
After studying Fine Art (Sculpture) at Loughborough University and graduating in 1999, Michael further refined his craftsmanship by studying Stonemasonry at York College, where he was awarded the prestigious S & J Whitehead Award for Stonemasonry. His exceptional talent and dedication to sculpture were recognised early in his career when he was elected an Associate Member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors. Michael Thacker has since achieved the distinguished status of Full Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors (MRSS), one of the highest professional recognitions for sculptors in the United Kingdom.
Michael spent fifteen years working as a highly skilled stone carver and mason at Lincoln Cathedral, where he developed an exceptional understanding of stone, traditional craftsmanship, and architectural design. This experience continues to influence his contemporary sculpture, with references to arches, pediments, and classical architectural forms evident throughout his work.
Today, Michael Thacker works full-time as a professional sculptor, creating unique Lincolnshire limestone and gold leaf sculptures for collectors, galleries, and public exhibitions across the UK. His work has been exhibited at leading art events and venues, including the Chelsea Flower Show, London Art Fair, Nottingham Castle Gallery, City Gallery Leicester, City Art House Lincoln, and the Living Gallery Birmingham.
Nature remains a powerful source of inspiration for Michael Thacker’s sculpture. Seedpods, shells, fossils, and emerging plant forms inform his creative process, exploring themes of growth, transformation, and renewal. His sculptures often reveal polished geometric structures emerging from rough-hewn organic surfaces, symbolising hidden potential and the relationship between the natural and constructed worlds.
